‘Viraja’s Town’ [Virajam, Yajanagara] Town/District, Odisha

The 13thC Viraja temple is dedicated to the goddess Durga manifested as Viraja and the town has been called ‘Viraja’,  ‘Viraja Kshetra’ and ‘Biraja Pitha’.

The original name Jajnanagar may refer to Brahminical ritual offerings [Skt: yajña, ‘sacrificial rite’; and Hin/Skt:  nagar/am, ‘city’, ‘town’], or simply as a corruption of Viraja, with pur replacing nagar at a later point.
