Hin: जैसलमेर jaisalamer
‘Jaisal’s Ridge’ – City/District, Rajasthan
From Jaisal and Hin: meru, ‘mountain’, ‘ridge’.
Rawal Jaisal, a Bhati Rajput ruler, founded the city and state of Jaisalmer in the 12thC. He moved here from Lodurva because the city had water resources and was easier to defend.
Jaisalmer is the ‘Golden City’. It is built on a ridge of sandstone with a picturesque fort, houses and temples sculpted from the same sandstone.
The modern Jaisalmer, in the middle of the sand dunes of the Thar Desert, is a magnet for tourists seeking the ‘Arabian Nights experience’ and camel treks; and for film-makers seeking authentic desert locations.
