‘Jagdal’s Settlement’ – City/District, Chhattisgarh
From Jagdal, a local ruler or chieftain, and Skt/Hin: pur, ‘(fortified) settlement’, ‘town’.
The name Jagdalpur is traditionally believed to come from Jagdal, a local figure, possibly a ruler or chieftain, combined with pur, meaning ‘town’ or ‘settlement.’ Some interpretations link it to the Jagdal clan, though historical references are scarce.
Jagdalpur served as the capital of the Bastar kingdom, ruled by the Kakatiya dynasty from the 14th century. Later, the region came under Maratha influence before being absorbed into British India. The Bastar rulers maintained their seat in Jagdalpur until the princely state was merged into independent India.
Today, Jagdalpur is the cultural, financial and economic hub of Bastar and its administrative HQ. Formerly it was the capital of the Bastar princely state – see Sundar (1997).
It is known for its tribal heritage, the Bastar Dussehra festival, and nearby natural attractions such as Chitrakote Falls and Tirathgarh Falls. The city retains a strong connection to indigenous traditions, particularly those of the Muria and Maria Gond tribes.
