From Sin: ja(va), ‘Malay, Javanese’; and  ela, ‘brook, rivulet, channel, canal’.

There are about 40,000 Sri Lankan Malays. Most settled during the 17th and 18th centuries when both Ceylon and Indonesia were under Dutch rule.

Ja-Ela is a suburb of Colombo.
