‘Indra’s City’ [Indur, Indrapur, Indreshwar] City/District, Madhya Pradesh (MP)
From Indra and Skt: pur, ‘fort’, ‘village’, ‘city’.
The village, Indrapur, got its name from the Indreshwar Mahadev temple and the modern city emerged in the early 18th century, marking an important link in Maratha trading routes.
The Holkars restored the temple in 1741 with Indra as the patron deity.
Indore, under British rule, was an important princely state ruled by the Holkar dynasty.
After joining the Union of India Indore was the briefly the state capital of Madhya Bharat from 1950 until 1956.
