Howrah City and District sit opposite Kolkata are on the western bank of the Hooghly River.

Howrah is famous for the cantilever bridge named after it which spans the Hooghly river. The bridge carries 100,000 vehicles and 150,000 pedestrians a day, making it one of the busiest bridges of its sort in the world.
