From Hin: haridrā/harada, ‘turmeric’ and Skt: vāṭī →oi, ‘site’, ‘enclosure’, ‘village’.
This derivation follows Harda (MP). It could also follow Haridwar (Utt) and refer to Skt/Hin: ‘Vishnu’, ‘protector’
Hardoi has been inhabited since ancient times, forming part of the Kosala and Panchala kingdoms. It is mentioned in local traditions as a site of early Aryan settlements.
During the medieval period, it was influenced by the Delhi Sultanate and later the Mughals, becoming a strategic military and administrative center.
In the 1857 Revolt, Hardoi was a site of rebellions against British rule, with local zamindars and fighters playing key roles. Under British administration, it became a district headquarters.
Today, Hardoi is an agricultural and industrial hub, known for:
- Sugarcane and rice farming, central to its economy.
- Textile weaving and handloom industries, with a historical legacy.
- Dairy and food processing industries, contributing to regional commerce.
