Ben:  হলদিয়া haladiẏā

‘Yellow (City)’  City, West Bengal

From Hin/Ben: haldi/haladi, ‘turmeric’, ‘yellow’

Haldia is surrounded by the Haldi River on the west and the Hooghly on the other sides. The name suggests something yellow: the soil, perhaps, or the river. It may also be connected with the Haldar caste of Bengali traders.

Haldia is a major river port and a centre for chemicals and petrochemicals. It is called the ‘Port City’ and services the capital city, Kolkata.
