Gandhinagar (founded in 1966) is a planned city, designed to replace Ahmedabad as the capital of Gujarat. It is named to honour Mahatma Gandhi, the charismatic (and spiritual) leader of the Independence movement and a native of Gujarat.
Gandhinagar is the tree capital of India with over half of its urban area under a green canopy.
