Sin: ගම්පහ gampaha – Tam: கம்பஹா gampahā
‘Five Villages’ WP, Sri Lanka
From Sin: gama, ‘village’; and paha, ‘five’.
The five villages are Medagama, Pahalagama, Ihalagama, Aluthgama and Pattiyagama.
All of them are in the vicinity of the modern Gampaha, except Pattiyagama which cannot be identified (apart from another Pattiyagama which is 40km distant).
Gampaha used to be known as Henarathgoda, famed for its Botanical Gardens and its collection of rubber trees.
