From Sin: gala, ‘stone, rock, rocky place’; and oya, ‘river, stream – smaller than ganga’.
The Gal Oya river was dammed in 1950 and the Gal Oya National Park was established in 1954 – it is the drainage basin for the Senenayake Samudra reservoir.
The Gal Oya, 108 km (67 mi) long, is the 16th longest river in Sri Lanka.
