From Skt: durga, ‘fort’, ‘stronghold’.
According to legend, the town was named after a fort that once stood here, though its precise location remains uncertain. Its original name, Shiva Durg, probably refers to its location on the Shivnath river.
The area was part of Dakshina Kosala in ancient times, later ruled by the Kalachuris of Ratanpur (10th–18th century). Under the Marathas, Durg became an administrative and military center. The British incorporated it into the Central Provinces, and it developed as a trade and transport hub due to its strategic location.
Durg is now an important industrial and educational center, closely linked with Bhilai, home to the Bhilai Steel Plant. The city is also known for its temples, particularly those dedicated to Shiva and Durga.
