‘Dust’  -City/District  Maharashtra

From Mar:  dhuḷē/dhūḷa, ‘dust’ Skt: dhūli

In a region famous for its summer dust-storms it is tempting to reach for the obvious answer; particularly as there are no clear historical or topographical alternatives.

Until the early 19thC Dhule was a small village of little importance; so small that it had to be re-populated after the 1803 famine after which the only way was up.

Dhule District is a front runner in solar and wind power generation and has one of Asia’s largest wind energy  projects, putting those summer dust storms to good use.
