Bulandshahr, meaning ‘the elevated city,’ derives its name from its strategic location on high ground near the Ganges. The region has ancient roots, with its older name being Baran, which is mentioned in historical sources.
Tradition holds that Ahibaran, a Rajput ruler, founded Baran in the early medieval period. Under the Delhi Sultanate, the city was fortified and renamed Bulandshahr, reflecting its importance as a prominent administrative and military outpost. During the Mughal era, it remained a prosperous center of trade and governance.
In the modern period, Bulandshahr has emerged as a significant centre for ceramics, pottery, and dairy farming. The region is home to Khurja pottery, a centuries-old craft that has gained international recognition.
