The name Bijbehara derives from Vijayeshwara, an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Over time, the name evolved phonetically into Bijbehara. It is also locally called Vejibror, a term in the Kashmiri language.
Bijbehara lies on the banks of the Jhelum River and is often referred to as the town of Chinars due to its expansive chinar tree groves [Platanus orientalis or Oriental plane], some dating back centuries. It has long been a center of trade and agriculture, renowned for its apple orchards and saffron cultivation.
