‘Bhoja’s Town’ Town, Madhya Pradesh (MP)
From (Raja) Bhoj; and Skt: pur, ‘(fortified) town’, ‘city’.
King/Raja Bhoja of the Paramara Malwa dynasty built a temple and fort here in the 11thC and two large stone dams to block and channel Betwa river, creating a large tank.
The Bhojeshvar Siva temple remains incomplete but houses a lingam 5.5m high. There is also a Jain temple featuring a 6m Bhagwan Shantinath statue.
