ବ୍ରହ୍ମପୁର brahmapura

‘City of Brahma’ [Brahmapur] City, Odisha

From Brahma, the creator god of Hinduism; and Skt: pura, ‘fort’, ‘city’.

Brahma is the forgotten god of the Hindu trimurti, ‘trinity’ of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva ; there are only a handful of temples dedicated to him in the whole of India -one of them here. There are, however, plenty of villages, towns and cities named after him: 20 or more in Odisha alone.

Berhampur is famous for its ikat silk, where textiles are patterned by ‘resist’ dyeing (waxing, tying or stitching the material to determine which areas take the dye).
