Sin: බත්තරමුල්ල battaramulla – Tam: பத்தரமுல்லை battaramullai

‘Rice Ferry Corner’ Suburb (Colombo), WP,  Sri Lanka

From Sin: bat, ‘boiled/cooked rice, meal’; tara, ‘ford, ferry, riverbank, port, harbour’; and mulla, ‘corner, angle’.

In the 15thC, the heyday of  the Kotte kingdom, cooks used to commute to the royal palace. They took a ferry from the opposite side of the Diyawanna Oya. Battaramulla or bat-tota-mulla, is where they started their journey.
