From West Banas river [Guj: ban, forest’, ‘wood’]; and Guj: kantha, ‘bank’, ‘shore’.
The 266km West Banas river flows from the southern Aravalli Range in Rajasthan, through Gujarat state into the seasonal wetlands of the Little Rann of Kutch.
Banaskantha is India’s top ranking district for potatoes, producing over 170,000 tonnes p.a. It is also a major centre for potato processing.
