Said to derive from English “residential area” used by indigo planters, later adapted into local usage.
Araria’s unusual name reflects Bihar’s colonial encounter: the district grew out of indigo plantations under British rule.
Today it lies in the fertile floodplains near the Nepal border, an area shaped by rivers and migration. The etymology, though prosaic, is a quirky reminder of how colonial bureaucracy left its mark on Bihar’s map.
