‘Ambika’s City’ – City/Capital (Surguja District), Chhattisgarh

From Ambika and Skt/Hin: pur, ‘fort’, ‘city’.

The name of the city  comes from Ambika Mahamaya Devi, an eight-armed goddess wielding an array of weapons variously identified with Amba, Durga, Bhagavathi, and Parvati.

Ambikapur was the capital of the Princely state of Surguja before Indian Independence and is now the HQ of both Surguja Division and Surguja District

Ambikapur is rated the cleanest city of Chhattisgarh and the cleanest city in India among cities with a population of 100,000 to 1 million.
