Sin: අඹේපුස්ස ambēpussa
‘Mango Creeper’ -Town, SBP, Sri Lanka
From Sin: amba, ‘mango’ and puswela, ‘elephant creeper’.
The scientific name for this large woody climber is Entada phaseoloides/pusaetha. It is a liana, a long woody vine that wraps itself around other trees plants. They are a key feature of tropical rather than temperate forests.
Ambepussa suggests a mango tree draped in its snake-like branches.
Cave (1910) also notes that ‘good snipe shooting is to be had here from November to February’.
